The Stars and the Angels, or the Natural History of the Universe and Its Inhabitants (Classic Reprint) - Stars Stars

Excerpt from The Stars and the Angels, or the Natural History of the Universe and Its Inhabitants

The views contained in the present Essay form a part of the Author's meditations on the harmonics of science and revelation. It appeared to him, that the continual retreat of Bible interpreters, before the onward march of natural science, was due to the false position which they originally occupied; and that the constantly apologetic attitude which the Bible was thus made to assume, would never be changed until that position was abandoned.

The idea that what is called the operation of the laws of nature, is less immediately the act of God than what is called miracle, has, he thinks, been too hastily admitted by theologians; and that, in consequence, they have been led to view with suspicion, or even a grudge, the aggressions of science on what seemed to be their professional domain. The consequence has been, that with such advocacy, the argument for the being of a God, has been growing weaker and weaker by every new discovery that ascribes to the action of law the glories of God's hand-work.
